What size yoga mat should I get?
Length
The length of the yoga mat should generally be slightly longer than your height. This ensures that you have enough space to lie down fully without your feet or head going off the edge during exercises.
For most people, a standard-length mat of around 173 cm (68 inches) is sufficient. However, if you are taller than average, you may prefer a longer mat, such as 183 cm (72 inches) or even longer.
Width
The standard width of a yoga mat is usually around 61 cm (24 inches). This width provides enough space for most yoga poses.
If you have a wider stance or prefer more space for moving around during your practice, you may consider a wider mat, such as 68 cm (27 inches) or more.
Thickness
The thickness of the yoga mat affects both comfort and stability. Thicker mats provide more cushioning and are generally more comfortable, especially for beginners or those with sensitive joints.
For beginners, a thickness of 6-8 mm is often recommended. This provides enough support and comfort while still allowing you to feel the ground and maintain stability.
As you become more advanced in your yoga practice, you may prefer a thinner mat (3-5 mm) to better feel the ground and maintain balance.
